Is there some clever way for getting to know the copyright status of a movie in different countries?
For the movie "No Man's Land" (1932) there is no entry at copyright.gov for either the original or the restored dvd version. Hans Eisler's musik to the film is copyrighted though. Does this mean, it would be safe to post the film, or should one check the status in different countries, where the movie still might be copyrighted?

Well, it was registered in the U.S. under the title "Hell On Earth". That copyright expired. Also, I searched the restored foreign copyrights document for the title 'Niemandsland', 'No Man's Land' and 'Hell On Earth' and found no record of the film's copyright being restored. I don't know about the 1969 restored version. That could have a copyright, but I don't have a way to check copyrights in 1970. Does your version of the film have a copyright notice? If so, what does it say.

For a movie produced in 1932 looking it up in the Copyright Office's online database will not be useful as it only has records back to '76.

Okay. Where should one then look? Also with regard to foreign countries (which seems necessary since the Uruguay/Metropolis thing.) Is there a "how to"-guide somewhere?

What is the actual title of the film? Is it German?

There are some documents on the copyright.gov site that list foreign copyrights that have been restored:
